Introduction to Omarchy
Omarchy First-Steps

Omarchy is a configuration based on the Arch Linux distribution, in this tutorial we will show you the first steps to install and few tips for your first uses of Omarchy.

Installation

Before installing Omarchy, you will need:

1. USB drive: you willl need a USB drive with at least 8 GB to create the installer.
2. Create a bootable USB drive, follow this tutorial to make itHow to create a Windows (or any) bootable USB from Linux with Ventoy

Omarchy is installed automatically with an ISO, to install Omarchy you will need to disable Secure Boot and TPM, you only need to input your username, password, git information if you are a developer, the machine's name, your keyboard distribution and your timezone.

The ISO installation can only be done in one drive, that is, all the data will be wiped from the drive.

If you need to do partitioning for dual boot, you'd need to do a  manual installation.

After installing, it will show you the time spent installing and it will tell you to reboot.

And you'd have Omarchy installed in your device.

Tips

Omarchy is a distribution that mainly uses Tiling as its window manager and uses hotkeys for everything.

The thing you will use the most is the terminal, the default terminal in Omarchy is Alacritty, you can access it in the Omarchy menu with SUPER + ALT + Space in the Apps section or with SUPER + Return.

One of Omarchy's main characteristics is that it uses Caps Key for autocompletion and quick access to emojis, to restore the key's functionality you'd need to edit Hyprland's configuration and change the function to an unused key.

nvim ./config/hypr/input.conf

We will need to change kb_options's value from compose:caps to compose:ralt (in this case, the ALT key was used)

If Omarchy's screensaver annoys you from overstimulation over the high speed, or if you just want to deactivate it, you can do so by going to Omarchy's menu and in the Toggle section you can select Screensaver to toggle it.

A few extra hotkeys for regular use:

  • SUPER + W to close the current window

  • SUPER + SHIFT + B to open Chromium

  • SUPER + SHIFT + F to open the file explorer
